MAKE BROOMS AT THE SILK MILL ON 04 OCTOBER 2025

MORNING WORKSHOP - 10:00-12:30
Where: The Silk Mill, Merchants Barton, Frome, Somerset BA11 1PT
Date: Saturday 04 October 2025
Skill Level: Beginners
Age: 18+ (or 16+  with a responsible adult)
Cost: £75 includes materials and adornment, all tools provided

Gather together this autumn in the magical Silk Mill in Frome, Somerset with other like-minded makers and weave your own enchanted hand broom to take home after this intimate 2.5 hour workshop!

Choose from two sessions on this day (morning session at 10:00 or afternoon session at 13:30). Numbers will be kept low so everyone receives the attention required. Students will choose their broom shape, size, and intention, and then tie it all up with the twine colour of your choice. You will leave with a beautiful thing that actually cleans. Plus it will be made to do your bidding and will definitely look fierce when not in use!

Students will learn the fundamentals of heritage handcrafted brooms (a pre-industrial heritage craft that uses no machinery and no electricity), as well as the processing and handling of fibre, various twine types, and other options available in the UK. Plus we will choose and attach an adornment to our brooms: a small flat-sided crystal, a pendant charm, a vintage brooch, or a posy of dried florals or herbs from your garden or other small but meaningful item. Perhaps you would like to bring something of your own, in addition to or instead of those to select from.

Whatever you choose, these brooms are perfect for smaller spaces: potting sheds, kitchen counters, camper vans, hearths, apothecary shelves or underneath your cauldron, the top of the altar or in ritual.

A broom made by you, unique to you and perfect for autumnal harvest and year-round celebrations and workings!

Recent Workshop Feedback:

"Brilliant, enthusiastic tutor. Was thrilled to create a really beautiful broom."

"I thought it was a great half day, and the tutor made a real effort to thoroughly teach the basics. She couldn't have done better."

Please note: broom making is a surprisingly physical craft and each broom is constructed in one sitting with one continuous length of twine. Students should be prepared to work with shoes off (socks are fine) and seated in a chair for up to an hour, possibly more (feel free to bring a cushion - will bring one or two extras. Broom craft requires strength and good dexterity in both hands and feet. Be prepared to engage your core, hands, arms, legs and back for extended periods. Broom making can be a real work-out!

Age restricted to 18+ (knives, razor blades, and lighters in use) or 16+ with an adult.

Transport: Frome has a train station, and buses run from all over the county, Bristol and beyond if you fancy it! The nearest car park is Merchants Barton Car Park next door, pay by phone app.
